Referee Courses

Rugby WA conducts Australian Sports Commission (ASC) approved referee, referee coach and touch judge courses that provide accreditation with the National Officiating Program (NOP). All courses are professionally staffed and all instructors receive specialist training in ARU course delivery. Courses are specifically designed for the relevant Law variations and the experience of participants.

FOUNDATION COURSE

The Foundation Course is an introductory education and training program for new referees and coaches that is designed to support the assessment requirements for Level 1 accreditation.  More information can be found under Accreditation Requirements for Officials. 

In addition, the Foundation Course also provides the mandatory SmartRugby compliance as stipulated by the ARU.

Duration: 8:00am – 5.00pm
Cost: $75.00 (GST inclusive)

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 2 REFEREE COURSE

This course forms part of the Intermediate Referee (Level 2) Accreditation Program and introduces more advanced refereeing techniques and applications of the Laws.  Participants must already be accreditated as a Level 1 Referee and have a minimum of 1 year's experience as a Referee.

Duration: 16 hours contact and home study
Cost: $55.00 (GST inclusive)

This is the introductory referee coaching course and provides and the basic techniques and methods in coaching referees.  Participants should possess at least a Level 1 Referee accreditation and have a broad experience of refereeing.

Duration: 8 hours contact and home study

LEVEL 1 ASSISTANT REFEREE (TOUCH JUDGE) COURSE

This course has been designed for the beginner Touch Judge, who has not had the opportunity, or who does not want to sit the Level I Referees Course. This Course highlights the key areas of the Touch Judge’s tasks, dividing the roles into primary, secondary and tertiary functions. During the process of establishing the roles of the Touch Judge, the participants will learn about the various Laws that affect their duties and will learn about the relationship that they will develop with the match referee. The course is also relevant for Level I and Level II referees.

Duration: 2.5 hours contact

LEVEL 2 ASSISTANT REFEREE (TOUCH JUDGE) COURSE

This course is designed to take the participant who has completed a period as a Level 1 Touch Judge to a higher degree of expertise and is generally restricted to accredited Referees.

Duration: 3 hours contact
Cost: $25.00 (GST inclusive)

OTHER EDUCATION MEETINGS

REFEREE EDUCATION MEETINGS (Dates to be confirmed)
The education meetings commence in March 2010 at Rugby Park and will continue at regular intervals throughout the season.

These meetings are designed to provide ongoing education and development for all officials and are organised jointly with the West Australian Rugby Union Referees' Association (WARURA).
